HAND-CARVED ESPECIALLY FOR THEM ~

"Believe."

Plant carved: Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)

Dogwood is "a small, deciduous tree with graceful branches that bloom in spring with large showy flowers (usually greenish-white, sometimes pink or yellow)." It is native to Virginia, US, and is considered as the official state flower. The carving is originally designed and hand-carved for my friend, Marie, who now lives in Texas but her roots are from Virginia.

"Show love."

Plant carved: Coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) and Japanese Cherry (Prunus serrulata L.)

The Coconut tree is indigenous to the Philippines and very abundant to tropical/warm countries. Japanese/Oriental Cherry is "a small tree, to 25 feet (8 m) tall, with white-pink flowers, that produces very inconspicuous, black fruits." It is indigenous to Japan and other countries in East Asia. This is a gift originally designed and hand-carved for my younger sister, Hiromi, who is rooted both in the Philippines and Japan. Though the Japanese Cherry was not the species that she grew up with. Instead, she remembers the blooms of Yamazakura (Prunus jamasakura S.) and/or Yoshino Cherry (Prunus yedoensis M.) trees that has flowers with five petals, compared to Japanese Cherry that has a double petal layering. Nevertheless, she received this gift of mine with the hopes of giving her something good.

"Blessed."

Plant carved: Texas bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis H.) and Red Dahlia (Dahlia coccinea)

Texas bluebonnet or Texas lupine is a wildflower plant, and one of the five bluebonnet species considered as the official state flower of Texas. It is native to Texas and other southern and southwestern states, as well as in northern Mexico. Meanwhile, Red Dahlia is a flowering plant species belonging to the genus, Dahlia, wherein Dahlia is declared as the national flower of Mexico. It is "native to Mexico, Central America and Colombia, and Mexico is home to 31 out of 42 of these species." The carving is originally designed and hand-carved for Mrs. Christy, whom I've met and got acquainted here in Texas and formed a blessed and trustworthy friendship. Her roots are from Texas, US, yet I learned she highly appreciates anything from Mexico and its culture.

These handcrafts are made from wood scraps salvaged at the cabinet shop that I'm working at. I thought smaller or defected woods for disposing can still have its "life" and be repurposed. Therefore, I collected some of these woods with a slit on one edge, and later realized it can be used as a paper/picture holder. I imagined a carving on its face with thoughtfulness and positivity, and be given as gifts to people I would like to extend my gratitude to, obtains more value and regains its purpose. So last Christmas 2020, I didn't spend anything for gifts other than my heart and time, which I think is invaluable to me and many others.
